We have been reporting on Windows 9 and it’s possible developer preview coming this year. We have also reported on the Windows 9 Leaked Screenshots. Now it looks like we are going to get a much needed feature along with it; and that is Virutal Desktops.
The News first broke out when Neowin first reported on it saying that Microsoft will be adding virtual desktops to Windows 9. With Virtual Desktops users can switch between Virtual Screens just like on Mac OS X and Ubuntu. Windows users have been always using alternatives with similar functionality, but Virtual desktops being built in to Windows could make a lot of users Appreciate it. It will also be more integrated in to it and the taskbar button could be used to switch between them. This also shows how much Microsoft is willing to do to make it’s existing Windows users stay on Windows.
We have also heard some reports saying that Microsoft will be removing the Charms Bar from Windows 9. The Charms bar is an overlay used to access Search, Share, the Start Screen, Devices, and Settings. I personally have loved using it on Touch Laptops, it’s a bit awkward while using a Mouse so this maybe a reason for it’s departure. I personally feel like Microsoft should keep this feature on Windows with better ways of accessing it using a Mouse; Better Implementation.
According to The Verge the Current Builds of Windows Threshold (Expected to be named Windows 9), does not have the Charms Bar. According to ZDNet “Metro-style” Windows 8 apps will get title bars that include some menus with the Charms components, and developers will need to add features to enable the share Charm. The change is likely related to the fact Microsoft is making its Windows 8 apps more flexible, running in floating separate windows on the desktop just like traditional apps. This should greatly improve the mouse and keyboard experience for these apps, something Microsoft has been gradually trying to fix in Windows 8 with various updates.
Other than this, Microsoft is also planning to allow Metro apps to float on the desktop in windows, much the same way that traditional x86 applications do today.
